Your First Chiropractic Visit: What to Expect

For many people, the first chiropractic appointment comes with a mix of hope and uncertainty. You know something is wrong — your back hurts, your neck is stiff, you have been dealing with headaches for months — but you are not quite sure what a chiropractor actually does, or what is going to happen when you walk through the door.

That uncertainty is completely normal. And it is one of the reasons we take the time to explain every step of the process to our new patients before we do anything.

Here is exactly what to expect during your first visit to Evergreen Spinal Health Center.

Before You Arrive

When you call to schedule your appointment, our front desk will ask you a few basic questions about your chief complaint and insurance coverage. We will also send you new patient paperwork to complete before your visit — you can do this online or arrive a few minutes early to fill it out in the office.

The paperwork covers your health history, current symptoms, medications, and any previous injuries or treatments. The more detail you provide, the better Dr. Joy can understand your situation before he even walks into the room.

The Consultation

Your appointment begins with a one-on-one consultation with Dr. Joy. This is a conversation, not an examination — it is your chance to explain what is going on in your own words.

Dr. Joy will ask about:

  • When your symptoms started and what you were doing at the time
  • What makes the pain better or worse
  • How the pain affects your daily life, sleep, and work
  • Your overall health history and any relevant past injuries or treatments
  • Your goals for care — what does "better" look like to you?

This conversation matters. Chiropractic care is not one-size-fits-all, and understanding your specific situation is essential to developing a treatment plan that actually works for you.

The Examination

After the consultation, Dr. Joy will perform a thorough physical examination. Depending on your symptoms, this may include:

Postural analysis: Evaluating how you stand and hold your body, which reveals a great deal about spinal alignment and muscle imbalances.

Range of motion testing: Measuring how far you can move your neck, back, and extremities in various directions.

Orthopedic tests: Specific maneuvers designed to identify which structures are involved in your pain.

Neurological screening: Checking reflexes, sensation, and muscle strength to rule out nerve involvement.

Spinal palpation: Dr. Joy will use his hands to feel the alignment and motion of each spinal segment, identifying areas of restriction, tenderness, or abnormal movement.

X-Rays

For most new patients, Dr. Joy will take digital X-rays of the spine. X-rays allow him to see the actual structure of your spine — the alignment of the vertebrae, the condition of the disc spaces, any arthritic changes, and any contraindications to specific treatment techniques.

X-rays are taken in our office and are reviewed with you the same day. Dr. Joy will walk you through what he sees and explain how it relates to your symptoms.

The Report of Findings

Once the examination and X-rays are complete, Dr. Joy will sit down with you for a report of findings. This is where he explains:

  • What he found during the examination
  • What your X-rays show
  • His diagnosis and what is causing your symptoms
  • His recommended treatment plan, including how many visits he anticipates and what each visit will involve
  • What you can realistically expect in terms of results and timeline

This is also your opportunity to ask questions. We want you to fully understand your condition and your options before you agree to anything.

Your First Treatment

If you are comfortable proceeding, Dr. Joy will typically perform your first chiropractic adjustment at the end of the initial visit. He will explain exactly what he is going to do before he does it, and he will check in with you throughout.

Chiropractic adjustments are generally gentle and well-tolerated. Some patients feel immediate relief; others notice a mild soreness for a day or two as the body adapts to the changes in joint position and muscle tension. Both responses are normal.

After Your Visit

Before you leave, we will schedule your follow-up appointments and answer any remaining questions. Dr. Joy may also give you home care recommendations — specific stretches, ice or heat application, or activity modifications — to support your recovery between visits.

We know that starting care with a new provider takes a leap of faith. Our goal is to earn your trust by being thorough, transparent, and genuinely invested in your outcome. If you have questions before your first visit, call us at (253) 683-4277 — we are happy to talk through any concerns.
