Gig Harbor Sports Injury Clinic: Dr. Joy's Approach to Active Living & Recovery

Gig Harbor has a well-earned reputation as one of the most desirable places to live in Washington State. The waterfront, the boutique shops along Harborview Drive, the trails at Cushman Trail and Crescent Creek Park, the sailing and kayaking on the Sound — it's a community built around an active, outdoor lifestyle.

That active lifestyle is one of the things we love most about our Gig Harbor patients. It's also why they come to see us.

At Evergreen Spinal Health Center, we're just across the Narrows Bridge in Tacoma's North End — about 15–20 minutes from most of Gig Harbor. We see a consistent group of patients from the Harbor, and their injuries reflect the way people here live.

Cycling and Trail Running Injuries

The Cushman Trail is one of the most popular multi-use paths in Pierce County, and Gig Harbor's road cycling community is active year-round. Cycling and trail running create a predictable set of musculoskeletal problems:

  • Low back pain and hip flexor tightness from the sustained forward-flexed cycling position
  • IT band syndrome and lateral knee pain in runners and cyclists
  • Neck and upper back pain from road bike positioning and extended head extension
  • Plantar fasciitis from repetitive impact in trail runners
  • Shoulder and wrist pain from road vibration and handlebar pressure

Dr. Joy addresses these injuries by restoring joint mobility in the spine and extremities, releasing the chronically shortened muscles that develop from repetitive sport positions, and providing corrective exercises that address the root cause — not just the symptom.

Water Sports and Kayaking Injuries

Gig Harbor's waterfront culture means a lot of kayaking, paddleboarding, rowing, and sailing. These activities demand significant rotational strength and stability from the thoracic spine, shoulders, and core. When that stability isn't there — or when it breaks down after a long paddle — we see:

  • Thoracic and rib pain from rotational strain in kayaking and rowing
  • Shoulder impingement from repetitive overhead and pulling movements
  • Low back pain from the seated paddling position
  • Wrist and forearm strain from grip-intensive water sports

Youth Sports Injuries

Gig Harbor has strong youth sports programs through Peninsula School District and local clubs — soccer, lacrosse, baseball, swimming, and cross-country are all popular. Young athletes are not immune to musculoskeletal injury, and early intervention often prevents minor issues from becoming chronic problems.

We treat youth athletes for growth-related conditions like Osgood-Schlatter disease, as well as acute injuries including ankle sprains, shoulder strains, and low back pain from sport-specific demands.

Auto Accident Injuries — Narrows Bridge Commuters

Many Gig Harbor residents commute to Tacoma daily via the Tacoma Narrows Bridge. That commute — particularly the SR-16 corridor and the bridge approaches — is one of the more accident-prone stretches in Pierce County. Rear-end collisions and side-impact crashes on the bridge approach are a regular source of whiplash injuries for Harbor commuters.

If you've been in an accident on your commute, don't wait. Whiplash symptoms often appear 24–72 hours after the collision, and early treatment leads to dramatically better outcomes. Dr. Joy provides full documentation for PIP insurance claims and personal injury cases.

Scoliosis Treatment

Gig Harbor's population includes many adults who were diagnosed with scoliosis as teenagers and have been managing it — or ignoring it — ever since. Dr. Joy's ScoliSmart protocol is a non-surgical, evidence-based approach to reducing spinal curvature and managing scoliosis-related pain in adults. It's not too late to treat it.

Doctor-Supervised Weight Loss

For Gig Harbor residents looking for a structured, medically supervised approach to weight loss, Dr. Joy offers ChiroThin — a program that combines a targeted nutritional protocol with chiropractic support. It's designed for people who want real results with professional guidance, not another generic diet plan.
